Tax, briefly (but read this)
- The 183-day rule. Tax residency is often triggered by spending 183+ days in a country in a tax year, but some use a “center of vital interests” test (family, primary home) instead.
- Your employer's risk. Working remotely from another country can create permanent establishment (PE) risk for your employer, even on a tourist visa. Some won't allow it without local registration. Check your remote-work policy.
- US citizens. Taxed on worldwide income wherever you live. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion excludes roughly $126k (2025) if you meet the physical-presence or bona-fide-residence test.
- Treaties & insurance. A tax treaty between your home and host country can prevent double taxation. Most nomad visas also require proof of international health cover (SafetyWing, Cigna Global, IMG).
- Always consult a cross-border tax professional before a move with real tax stakes. Mistakes are expensive.
