Mozilla Foundation·United States
Themed open calls awarding up to $50,000 plus a year of mentorship to open source projects; no call was open at the time of this fetch, the most recent published round being the AI and Environmental Justice Awards.
What you get
“Awards range up to $50,000 each and include one year of Mozilla mentorship and support.”
Can you apply
Projects must be open source and consist of a working prototype, a community of contributors, and a user base. (Given the early stage of research in the AI and environmental justice space, for this round of funding, we are also willing to consider earlier-stage and more experimental projects, provided they will be built by a team with a past track record of success.)
When
Not open right now, and no next round has been announced.

What Mozilla Foundation funds
Funds open source technologists working on trustworthy AI and internet health through time-limited, themed open calls with mentorship attached. Its earlier Mozilla Open Source Support (MOSS) program, which awarded roughly $5,000 to $150,000 per project, is on indefinite hiatus and is not accepting applications.

Launched in 2022, the fund runs a themed call roughly annually and takes a whole cohort at once. The most recent call with published dates and terms is the AI and Environmental Justice Awards: applications September 7 to October 5, 2023, $300,000 total, awards up to $50,000 each, cohort announced February 2024, with awardees in India, France, Kenya, Paraguay, Uganda and the US, including named individuals as well as universities and cooperatives. Mozilla's grantmaking pages currently point visitors to a notification signup rather than an open application portal, and the MTF program page under /what-we-fund/programs/ did not resolve, so no current-round dates or amounts could be confirmed.
